Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Southern Michigan Arms?

Southern Michigan Arms is a small, family-owned and operated firearms dealer. Our goal is to provide you with superior customer service and satisfaction. We strive to be completely honest in our item descriptions so that our customers are completely satisfied with their purchase. We don't like to find surprises on a gun when we open a box, and we know our customers wouldn't either.

That being said, we at Southern Michigan Arms would like our customers to know that we are still working regular 7am-5pm jobs in addition to running our small dealer's shop. So, don't fret if we don't respond to an email within an hour, or if our phone goes to voice mail. Rest assured, we will do our utmost to get back with you as soon as possible.

We look forward to serving you for all your firearm needs!

What are Southern Michigan Arms' business hours?

As stated above, we work regular 7am-5pm day jobs in addition to managing this firearms dealership (and all that entails). As such, we can not take firearms-related calls during those hours. Please contact us via voicemail or email for the fastest response. Owing to our many outside commitments, email and voicemail are the best ways to contact us. Please leave us a message with your contact information and a good time to reach you and we will return your call as soon as possible

We are able to respond to emails through out the work day, so if your inquiry is of an urgent nature, we recommend you contact us via those means.

What is the best way to contact Southern Michigan Arms?

Email. By far. We are a very small shop. We work day jobs and have many commitments outside of Southern Michigan Arms and work, so we are rarely around to answer the phones. We are always able to answer emails quickly, so if you have an urgent question for us, it is best to simply email us and await a response.

Does Southern Michigan Arms have a retail storefront for walk-in customers?

Not at this time. We do most of our business online. However, if you are a local customer and would like to pick up an item locally, we are more than happy to make an appointment to meet you. Our offices are located not far from downtown Battle Creek.

Does Southern Michigan Arms offer interstate transfer services?

Yes. If you are local to the Battle Creek, MI area and wish to have a firearm transferred in from out of state, we are more than happy to perform that service for $25 per background check. Simply contact us via email or phone and let us know what you are interested in receiving and we will give you full details.

Is Southern Michigan Arms a federally-licensed firearms dealer?

Yes. We are fully licensed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. In addition, Southern Michigan Arms is a Class III Special Occupational Taxpayer (SOT) and licensed to buy, sell, and trade fully-automatic firearms and suppressors.

How do I purchase a firearm from Southern Michigan Arms?

- It is pretty easy. Here is the process for a modern firearm (one not considered a Curio & Relic by the ATF):

  • Find a firearm on our website that you're interested in and place an order via secure shopping cart.
  • Call a dealer in your area and ask if they are willing to do an interstate transfer on your behalf, and inquire as to the cost. (Usually between $20-$30)
  • When you find a dealer who will do the transfer, have them email, mail, or fax their FFL to us at the following address:

Southern Michigan Arms
P.O. Box 114
Battle Creek, MI 49016

Fax: 269-968-6690

  • Once we receive your payment and your dealer's FFL, we will ship the firearm to your dealer
  • Once he or she receives the firearm, you may make arrangements with your dealer to pick it up and perform the necessary paperwork

- Here is the process for a C&R eligible firearm:

  • Find a firearm on our website that you're interested in and let us know by clicking the "Contact Us" link
  • Mail us payment and email, mail, or fax us a signed copy of your C&R FFL.
  • Once we receive both payment and FFL, we will ship the firearm to the address on your FFL.

Does Southern Michigan Arms offer a return policy on their items?

Yes. For firearms, we fully honor a 3-day, non-firing inspection and refund period. Unless explicitly specified otherwise. If you are unsatisfied with your firearm for any reason, please let us know within 3 days of receipt of said firearm and we will refund your purchase price less shipping. If you have shot the firearm, we can not honor a refund on it. This 3-day inspection period begins at the time the gun arrives at your local dealer's shop. It is your responsibility to make arrangements for a complete inspection within that time period.

For items other than firearms (parts, accessories, etc), we offer a 7-day return policy. If you are unhappy with your purchase, let us know within 7-days and we'll refund your purchase price less shipping.

In all cases, the items must be returned in exactly the same condition as they were sent.

What if an item is damaged in shipping?

If an item is damaged in shipping, notify us immediately as we will have to begin the claims process with the carrier. All items are shipped via UPS ground unless otherwise noted and are insured to their full value. We've seen what the monkeys at the major carriers can do, so we will do our best to package every item securely and safely.

Does Southern Michigan Arms take special orders or have any kind of finder's service?

Yes. Regardless of what it is, we will look for it. If you're looking for a readily-available modern firearm, we would love to quote it for you. Just let us know what you're looking for and we'll let you know the best price we can find. We'll do our best to beat the competition.

If you're looking for something older, rarer, and less-commonly-found, let us know and we will keep our eyes peeled to help find the perfect item for you. Drop us a note with your contact information, some details of what you're looking for, what you're looking to spend, and we will be on the hunt. If we find something, we'll let you know immediately.

Does Southern Michigan Arms have a lay-away program?

Not at this time. We used to offer them, but got burned on every single one we tried, so the program has been discontinued.

Does Southern Michigan Arms deal in machine guns, suppressors, or other NFA items?

Yes. We are a fully-capable NFA dealer. We deal in machine guns and suppressors. Transfer fees for NFA items are $75. If transferring multiple NFA items at a time, the first item is $75, each subsequent item is $50. Please contact us via email if you would like us to handle your NFA transfer. sales@somiarms.com
